中英联合高级暑期学校7月27日在我校开幕

    我校将于2009年7月27日至7月31日举办中英联合高级暑期学校“利用干旱区湖泊沉积物追踪区域环境变化”。

    此次暑期学校由我校副校长、西部环境教育部重点实验室主任陈发虎教授和英国伦敦大学环境变化研究中心主任Jonathan Holmes 教授联合向英国研究理事会(RCUK)、中国国家自然科学基金委员会(NSFC)提出申请并获得批准。

    本次暑期学校邀请了从事干旱区湖泊沉积物与环境变化研究的英国专家5人、美国专家2人、国内专家6人为暑期学校学员授课。来自英国的10名学员和来自国内各高校和研究所的20名学员将参加此次暑期学校,接受湖泊沉积物与环境变化研究的科研培训。暑期学校为期一周,包含定量化研究的计算机实习和一天野外实践教学。

    此次暑期学校在我校举办,体现了我校西部环境教育部重点实验室在干旱区湖泊沉积与环境变化领域的实力和在国际上的影响力,对西部环境湖泊沉积与环境变化研究、尤其是提高湖泊沉积研究团队的整体水平将起到重要作用。通过举办本次暑期学校,将促进中英两国科学家和青年科研人员(研究生和博士后)的学术交流和合作,提高青年科研人员的研究水平。

Aims
In order to strengthen collaborative research between the UK and China further in recent years, and especially to enable early-career researchers and research students to benefit from interaction with experts and researchers from the other country, the summer school designs the following programmes.
  • Introduction    This part will delivered by both coordinators (Prof Fahu Chen and Prof Jonathan Holmes), introducing the significance and roles of lake sediments in paleoenvironmental researches to young scientists in related fields. The international research programmes and projects with lake sediments will also be introduced. This part will focus on the important scientific questions and updated progresses in paleoenvironmental redearches in the world.
  • Research training    This part will focus on the research methods in environmental researches with lake sediments, including the approaches of sedimentology, chronology, magnetism, paleontology (pollen, ostrcods, diatoms, chironomids, plant macrofossils etc.), and geochemistry (organic and inorganic) etc. Especially, the method of quantification of environmental parameters with transfer functions based on the ecological data of fossil assembladges (pollen, diatoms, ostracods and chironomids) will be introduced to the young scientists from both countries. This is a powerful research method in reconstructing the paleoenvironments with fossils in lake sediments.
  • Computer and field practice    We will also let the young scientists have a chance practicing the related softwares used in establishing transfer functions on computers. The detailed procedures and attentions that should be paid in processing the ecological data will be taught. Then the students will have a set of sample data and analyze the data step by step under the tutoring of the teacher. In addition, we also arrange a short excursion to Yongjing county in Gansu Province, the landforms and sedimentary processes will be introduced to the students based on the previous research results.
  • Bilateral communications    Besides the lectures from the teachers, the students are also encouraged to give a short introduction of their own current researches. The teachers will give comments and suggestions to their researches. Besides, both the lecturers and students will have enough academic exchanges during the tea breaks and the beer evening. Possible collaborative researches will also be discussed between China and UK scientists before the summer school ends.
