Outline
The Lanzhou University Research School of Arid Environment and Climate Change invites you to attend the First International Symposium on New Techniques for Geohazard Research and Management that will be held in Lanzhou from September 10 to 15, 2012. This symposium commemorates the Zhouqu debris flow disaster in August 2010. The focus of the symposium will therefore be on addressing geohazards research and management in Southern Gansu. Case studies from across the world are invited to highlight new techniques that can help provide safer futures for people living in these unstable landscapes.
The main themes that will be addressed during the symposium are
1. Geohazards in Southern Gansu
2. New techniques addressing unstable landscapes; the geological/seismic context
3. New techniques addressing unstable landscapes; geomorphological processes
4. New techniques addressing unstable landscapes; human and environmental dimensions
5. Development of monitoring, warning systems and risk assessment of geohazards
6. Development of mitigation and management strategies in unstable landscapes
We aim to conclude the symposium with a workshop to facilitate the formulation of international cooperation strategies to address specific geohazards such as the debris flow disaster that devastated the town of Zhouqu (South Gansu) in August 2010. There will be a post-symposium tour to Southern Gansu where participants will be able to get first-hand experience of the geohazards in this region.
The symposium is organized by
• Research School of Arid environment and Climate Change, Lanzhou University (LZU)
• Gansu Institute of Geo-Environment of Monitoring
• Geohazards Research Institute, Gansu Academy of Sciences
• Xi’an Center of Geological Survey
• Lanzhou University of Technology
The symposium is supported by an international advisory panel
Prof Zuyu Chen, China Institute of Water Resources & Hydropower Res
Prof Yueping Yin, Centre of Geohazards Emergency, MLR
Prof Runqiu Huang, Chengdu University of Technology
Prof. Dave Chan, University of Alberta, Canada
Dr Tom Dijkstra, Loughborough University (UK) and BGS (UK)
Dr Janusz Wasowski, Italian National Research Council - Institute for Geo-hydrological Protection, Bari, Italy
Dr Andy Gibson, University of Portsmouth (UK)
Language
The official language for all abstracts and presentations is English.
Venue
The main campus of Lanzhou University (LZU), Lanzhou, China
Abstract submission
The initial conference publication will be based on extended abstracts. These extended abstracts must be produced on the basis of the following template:
Abstract title, Author’s names (family name in Capital), Affiliation (Institutions and address), First author’s e-mail and Extended Abstract text and References.
All text must be in 11pt Arial, 1.15 spacing
All margins must be set to ‘normal’ (2.0 cm all borders)
The extended abstract must fit in two pages.
Extended Abstracts should be submitted to jinli@lzu.edu.cn by July 10, 2012. Authors will be notified of acceptance of their abstracts by August 10, 2012. Accepted abstracts will be published in the symposium program volume, which will be distributed to all participants.
Following the symposium, a selection of contributions will be encouraged to be developed as journal papers for the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology – an international scientific journal published by the Geological Society Publishing House (UK).
Presentation
The symposium will include oral and poster sessions. Groups of selected abstracts will be invited for oral presentations of 15 minutes each, followed by a joint discussion session. The conference facilities will be equipped with a data projector for power-point presentations. Abstracts selected for poster presentation should be presented on A1 portrait format.

Location
The main campus of Lanzhou University is located in the Chengguan district of Lanzhou at Tianshui South Road. The distance from Lanzhou Zhongchuan airport to the campus is about 70km and from Lanzhou Eastern railway Station is about 2km. There are buses linking the airport with Central Lanzhou and the railway station. Cars can be arranged to meet you at the Airport and take you to Tsuiying Hotel on September 9.

Field Excursion
The route will take in the landscapes around the following places: Lanzhou, Dongxiang, Yongjing, Zhouqu and Wudu. Numerous landslides and debris flows exist in Gansu of which most are concentrated in the above five places. In the Lanzhou, Dongxiang and Yongjing regions, landslides are characterized by loess mass movements, while in Zhouqu and Wudu debris flows and bedrock landslides dominate.
